Spring 2009

Newsletters

Welcome to the new season of 2009. All Officers and Committee were re-elected at the AGM last November and we welcome Margaret Bailey onto the Committee for the new season.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN, SUE WHITTY

The weather has had a big impact on this winter with very little tennis being played, but at last we have seen members appearing at the courts again! Let’s hope the recent sunny weather will continue and we can all get playing! On Saturday 21 March a few stalwart members formed a working party to tidy up the courts and surrounding areas, cutting back the path, weeding and leaf clearing. Many thanks to Michael Heeley, Roger Jowett, Mike Coombs and Nick Trout for doing such a good job. I look forward to seeing lots of members, old and new, making use of our great little club over the next few months! Please support it !

There will be an American Tournament on Saturday 18 April at 2pm which will be for adults and juniors; we hope to have an adult partnering a junior , you don’t have to come with a partner, just turn up and the format will be as normal , mixing up with different partners throughout the afternoon. Other dates for American Tournaments are as follows; Sat 20 June at 2pm, Sat 4 July and a Junior American Tournament at 10am, Sat 17th October at 2pm.

COACHING
Michelle Collins will be organising and running this year’s coaching sessions. She will be doing junior sessions during the Easter holidays on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 2 till 4pm both weeks. Contact Michelle on 01403 892570 for more information about costs and booking. Also see her website www.tennismichelle.co.uk

Michelle is offering a free open evening on Monday 27 April from 6pm for juniors and 6.30pm for adults just for fun and to see what interest there is for coaching which she will be offering on Monday nights from Monday 11 May at £6 per hour for adults and £4 for juniors. She is happy to offer pay as you go.

WIMBLEDON BBQ
The Wimbledon BBQ and tournament and ticket draw will be on Saturday 16 May from 2pm. More details to follow. To be eligible for the ticket draw, you must be a member of British Tennis, this includes juniors who may be included if they wish. It is free to join till at least 2012 so if you haven’t joined yet, please do so as there are great benefits to members and the club, as ticket allocation is based on the number of our members who have joined British Tennis. (Subscriptions must be paid by May 1 to be eligible for the draw). You can join up to British Tennis via the link on our website.

CLUB TOURNAMENT
Club Finals weekend will be Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September. Information about the tournament will be sent out with membership packs.

COURT SECURITY
As before the code will change every 2 months, commencing 1 May. Numbers will be issued with membership cards . Please ensure that you always lock up the courts when you leave as the gate has often been found open which makes us an easy target for vandals. We have suffered a bizarre instance recently when one section of one of the nets was carefully cut below the tape and removed. Many thanks to Comptons Tennis Club who very kindly gave us a net which they had spare. This has saved us at least £90 for a new one so we are very grateful to them.

CLUB LEASE
We are pleased to inform members that we have reached an agreement with the Parish Council to extend the club lease for a further 10 years from 1 Apil 2009. One of the conditions in the lease is that the club are responsible for maintenance of the courts and surrounding areas. We therefore have a duty to keep the courts in good condition and the grass areas outside the courts neat and tidy, so please do take all litter home.

Regarding the courts, the Committee are seeking advice on the condition of the court playing surface with a view to keeping the courts moss free and maintaining a sound playing surface. This review is still at an early stage.

Another condition in the lease concerns parking. Please do not park on the Broadbridge Heath Road next to the courts but please use the lay-by in Byfleets Lane.

CLUB WEBSITE
The club website contains all the latest news about the club so do keep browsing.

SUBSCRIPTIONS
Subscriptions are now due. We are pleased to announce that these remain at last year’s rates ie. £45 per adult, £80 per couple, £95 per family, £20 for students and £15 for juniors. A membership renewal form is enclosed with this newsletter. If you need a form for a friend, further copies can be downloaded from the website. Membership cards will be available shortly for those who have already renewed.
