Message from the chairman, Sue Whitty
Welcome to the 2008 season which I am hoping can improve on last year’s success. The membership had risen to 110 by the end of last season. There has been quite a lot of tennis played over the winter months but as always the weather had the upper hand on a few occasions to scupper some of the games! The Blue Nose Challenge was taken up by 20 people and quite a lot of matches have been taking place. Over the next month there will be a change of partners. The courts have had anti-moss treatment recently and some repair work is also taking place to some of the posts which have cracked.
New Season's Events
The new season will begin on Saturday 5 April at 2pm with an American tournament which is open to juniors and prospective members as well, so if you know anyone who might be interested in joining, do get them to come along.
In addition there will also be the Wimbledon BBQ and Tournament on Saturday 24 May at 2pm. The club will be allocated a number of pairs of tickets for the Championships and all members will be eligible for the draw . This is always a great event so be sure to be there! More details later. (N.B. Subscriptions must be paid by !st May to be eligible for the draw). There are some very significant changes taking place with regard to how the club will be allocated Wimbledon tickets from next year. The numbers of tickets will be based on the number of our members who are also members of British Tennis. This year it is free to club members but next year it will cost £7.50 a head. There will be more information about this to follow.
Another important date for your diaries is the Club Tournament Finals Weekend. This will be Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 September. More information will be sent out with your membership packs. There will also be a number of other American tournaments throughout the year, the dates for which will follow in the next newsletter.
We are looking to arrange some friendly matches with various local clubs so if any of you are interested in taking part do put your name forward to any of the committee.
Subscriptions
At the A.G.M. it was agreed that as subscriptions have not increased for several years there should be a small increase this year. The new rates are: £45 per adult, £80 per couple, £95 per family and students remain at £15.
Coaching
The coaching format being offered this year will be different to recent years as it will be in the form of a “clinic” each one relating to a different area of tennis eg. Doubles play or backhand. There will be sessions beginning 26 April for 6 weeks (excluding 24 and 31 May) Details to follow.
Court Padlock
As last year, the codes will be changed every two months from the beginning of the season and the numbers will be printed on the membership cards with the dates they will be changed.
Court Bookings
The courts are open all year. Booking is advisable during the summer by ringing Peter or Stephanie Ballard on 01403 267133. Courts may be booked up to one week in advance. If you have not booked a court, you must give way to other players who have booked (including members of the public who have hired a court).
